US Sanctions on Russian Energy Buyers Face China’s Economic Backlash

China has expressed strong disapproval of a new US legislative proposal aimed at sanctioning major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas. The Chinese government has stated its intent to take all necessary actions to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its businesses facing potential repercussions from this bill.

Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized that China stands firmly against unilateral sanctions that are not sanctioned by international law or the United Nations Security Council. He pointed out that such measures, according to China, lack legal grounding and violate international norms.

The US proposal targets the globe’s largest consumers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, with China being one of the primary countries potentially affected by these sanctions. This move comes amid ongoing tensions and geopolitical maneuvering between the US and China, particularly concerning energy trade and global economic strategies.

Lin further cautioned that resorting to double standards and coercive tactics could backfire. He reiterated China’s stance against what it views as unlawful unilateral sanctions, suggesting that such actions could lead to negative consequences not only for international relations but also for the countries imposing them.
