Amidst enduring tensions between Russia and Japan, Moscow has formally expressed its discontent over Tokyo’s decision to deploy US-made Typhon medium-range missile systems on Kyushu, a southern Japanese island. The move has been described by Russia as a potential threat to regional security, further straining the already complex relationship between the two nations.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a protest note issued earlier this month, cautioned that the installation of these missile systems could destabilize peace in the region. Moscow has urged Japan to reconsider and eliminate the missile systems, emphasizing the need for Tokyo to address these concerns with seriousness.
This diplomatic friction coincides with an ongoing territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands, which remains a significant point of contention. The islands are currently under Russian control but are claimed by Japan, a disagreement that has prevented the two countries from signing a formal peace treaty since the end of World War II.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko highlighted these concerns during discussions with Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto in Moscow. The dialogue underscores the persistent geopolitical tensions that complicate diplomatic relations between Russia and Japan.
