South Korea Continues Lower Tariffs on Taiwan Fruit, Boosting Trade Till August

by admin477351

In a bid to stabilize food prices and support local markets, South Korea has decided to prolong its preferential tariff program for fruit imports from Taiwan. Initially set to conclude at the end of June, the program will now continue until August 15, allowing for reduced import duties on bananas, pineapples, and mangoes. The tariff on these fruits will be significantly lowered from its standard 30% rate to just 5%, easing the cost for South Korean importers and consumers.

This extension is strategically timed to coincide with Taiwan’s peak mango export season, a move that Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture believes will bolster the country’s fruit exports. The South Korean market remains a vital destination for Taiwanese mangoes, and this tariff relief comes at a crucial moment. It precedes the peak of domestic mango production in South Korea, thus filling a potential supply gap and meeting consumer demand effectively.

By maintaining this tariff reduction, South Korea is not only securing a steady influx of high-demand fruits but also supporting Taiwan’s agricultural sector. The Taiwanese Ministry of Agriculture has emphasized its commitment to enhancing the quality of its mango exports through various improvement programs. Furthermore, they are actively engaging in promotional campaigns and forging alliances with international retailers to strengthen their global market presence.

Despite the challenges presented by fluctuating global market conditions, Taiwanese mango exports have shown resilience, maintaining strong performance this year. With South Korea being a significant importer, the extended tariff program is expected to sustain this positive trend. The partnership between the two countries highlights the importance of international cooperation in agricultural trade, benefiting both producers and consumers alike.
