Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in fostering cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The country’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, noted that Vietnam played a pivotal role in the summit’s success by promoting ASEAN’s central role and advocating for a deepened strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation focused on key principles such as dialogue, cooperation, peaceful resolution of disputes, and adherence to international law. They proposed enhancing collaboration in essential sectors, including energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. The summit concluded with new frameworks set to fortify ASEAN–Russia cooperation until 2030, highlighting energy as a crucial component of their partnership.
Vietnam took the opportunity to announce its hosting of the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, demonstrating its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation. This move aligns with the country’s commitment to bolstering connections within the region and beyond.
During the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks revolved around broadening cooperation in areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam has expressed optimism that the outcomes of the summit will strengthen ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and open new avenues for economic growth and collaboration across Eurasia. This event marks another step in Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to play a pivotal role in regional and international diplomacy.
