Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, has issued a warning about the potential geopolitical ramifications stemming from the global shortage of AI memory chips. As demand for these critical components steadily surpasses supply, Chey highlighted that governments around the world are beginning to view access to advanced memory chips as a crucial aspect of economic security. This could lead to international pressure being applied to secure these supplies, he suggested.
According to Chey, the demand for AI memory chips is projected to rise dramatically, with customers expected to request between 60% to 100% more by 2027 than they do currently. However, the expansion of production capacity is not keeping pace with this surge in demand. Particularly, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is vital for AI processors, is experiencing the most acute shortages.
In response to these challenges, SK hynix is taking proactive measures by accelerating investments in new manufacturing facilities located in South Korea. The company is also considering potential sites overseas, including in the United States, as part of its strategy to meet the escalating demand. Chey underscored the importance of quickly expanding production capabilities, emphasizing that this is crucial not only for maintaining South Korea’s leading position in the semiconductor industry but also for preventing prolonged high prices that could attract new competitors and potentially destabilize the global market.
