At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct meeting to advance peace negotiations. Zelenskyy had suggested a face-to-face discussion in a neutral location like Switzerland or Turkey, aiming to initiate diplomatic talks from the current frontlines and secure a complete ceasefire during negotiations. However, Putin expressed that he sees “no point” in such discussions at the present time.
Putin reiterated Russia’s objectives in Ukraine, emphasizing that Russian forces have secured full control over the Luhansk region and most of the Donetsk region. He also maintained Moscow’s demands for Ukraine to cede control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin’s stance, arguing that Russia’s refusal to engage in talks indicates a preference for continuing the conflict rather than seeking a diplomatic resolution.
In response to the stalled peace efforts, Ukraine has escalated its military actions, targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure. This includes drone strikes aimed at ports, cargo ships, and fuel facilities. Russia has acknowledged these attacks and announced plans to bolster its air defense systems to counter further aggression.
Despite the ongoing conflict and the impact of international sanctions, Putin defended Russia’s economic stability. He argued that the nation remains resilient under economic pressure and financial restrictions imposed by Western countries. The Russian leader aimed to reassure the strength of the country’s economy amid the challenges posed by the war and sanctions.
