Peter Cullen, the beloved Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing to life iconic characters such as Optimus Prime from Transformers and the ever-somber Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at the age of 85. His family announced that Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, with loved ones by his side.

Born in Montreal, Cullen embarked on his professional journey in the world of Canadian television and radio, before carving out a niche as one of the most distinguished voice actors in the entertainment industry. His journey to fame began in 1984 when he first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series. Cullen’s deep, authoritative voice became synonymous with the noble Autobot leader, a role he reprised in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, and a host of spin-off projects.

In addition to his work as Optimus Prime, Cullen’s voice became intrinsically linked to Eeyore, the gloom-ridden donkey of the Winnie the Pooh universe. He portrayed Eeyore in “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” and continued to voice the character across various television series, films, and video games, endearing himself to audiences with his portrayal of the loveably forlorn character.

Cullen’s versatility extended beyond these roles. He voiced KARR, the sinister counterpart to KITT, in the popular television series “Knight Rider.” His unique vocal prowess was also showcased in the 1987 action film “Predator,” where he created the iconic clicking sounds of the alien creature. Additionally, he lent his voice to King Kong in the 1976 film remake, further demonstrating his broad range as a voice actor.

Throughout his illustrious career, Cullen often credited his older brother, Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, for inspiring the creation of Optimus Prime’s principled personality. His brother’s influence encouraged Cullen to shape Optimus Prime as a character who exuded strength without aggression. His portrayal of Optimus Prime earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011, and in 2023, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. Cullen’s legacy as a voice actor leaves an indelible mark on popular culture, his performances forever associated with some of the most beloved animated and science-fiction characters.
