Cuban Fuel Supply Delayed as Russian Tanker Alters Course Mid-Atlantic

by admin477351

A Russian tanker carrying a cargo of diesel fuel set out for Cuba but reportedly failed to reach its destination, spending several weeks adrift in the Atlantic Ocean before altering its course toward Brazil. The tanker, named Universal, embarked on its journey from Russia in April with approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel onboard. Initially headed for Cuba, maritime tracking data indicated that the vessel spent weeks drifting in the Sargasso Sea, located northeast of the Caribbean, before making a sudden turn southward.

The tanker’s intended destination was later updated to “For order,” a maritime term used when a vessel is awaiting further instructions or a precise destination. This development comes amid the backdrop of stringent sanctions placed on the vessel by the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada. The Universal had departed from the Russian port of Vistino in early April, and its journey was partly accompanied by Russian naval ships before it entered the broader Atlantic.

Cuba, in the meantime, has been grappling with significant fuel shortages and frequent electricity blackouts, with the pressure on its fuel imports mounting. Only one Russian tanker has reportedly succeeded in delivering oil supplies to Cuba this year, having been granted the necessary authorization to proceed with delivery. The fuel from that shipment has since been depleted, exacerbating the island nation’s ongoing energy woes.

The United States has been intensifying economic pressure on Cuba, simultaneously advocating for political and economic reforms within the country. In addition, tensions between Washington and Havana have been further inflamed by recent US legal actions targeting former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, related to the 1996 shootdown of aircraft belonging to the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. Adding to this strained atmosphere, the US recently deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying strike group to the region.
