The InterContinental Phuket Resort has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), marking it as the inaugural InterContinental property in Thailand and the third IHG Hotels & Resorts location in the nation to earn this esteemed sustainability accolade. The certification process was meticulously conducted by Control Union Certifications, a GSTC-accredited body, and evaluated the resort’s performance across four key domains: management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental performance.
Among the resort’s notable environmental initiatives is a robust program aimed at minimizing food waste. This includes the use of an Oklin Food Waste Composter, which can process approximately 125 kilograms of food waste daily, reducing waste volume by 80-90% within a day and transforming it into fertilizer. Consequently, around 360 kilograms of fertilizer are produced each month, benefiting local schools, gardens, farms, and organizations. Additionally, the resort employs AI-based food-waste monitoring to assist culinary teams in improving portion control and inventory practices, further supporting their sustainability goals.
Beyond food waste initiatives, the resort is committed to preserving the local environment, particularly Kamala Beach. Through the Proud Kamala program, the resort helps maintain roughly three kilometers of coastline, mitigating the amount of waste that enters the marine ecosystem. In collaboration with the Ocean For All Foundation, the resort supports the “License to Clean” initiative, which deploys a coastal-cleaning catamaran to collect waste from surrounding waters for recycling, reuse, or disposal.
Water conservation is a cornerstone of the resort’s sustainability strategy, with 80% of its landscape irrigation needs supplied by treated wastewater, complemented by rainwater harvesting techniques. The property is also LEED Gold certified, featuring energy-efficient solutions such as LED lighting, motion sensors, and energy monitoring systems designed to achieve about 25% energy savings. Furthermore, the resort’s commitment to local sourcing involves partnerships with over 19 farmers and communities across Thailand, including those in Phang Nga, some of whom utilize fertilizer derived from the resort’s composting efforts.
The resort’s dedication to sustainability extends to its culinary offerings, particularly at Sipping Tiger, where collaboration with Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University has led to the creation of cocktails using locally sourced plants and botanicals, incorporating ingredients that might otherwise be underutilized. According to General Manager Bjorn Courage, the GSTC certification not only validates the resort’s sustainability efforts but also serves as a guiding framework for the continuous enhancement of its environmental and community programs. Located on Kamala Beach, the InterContinental Phuket Resort offers 221 rooms, suites, and villas, as well as a range of amenities including restaurants, bars, wellness facilities, and swimming pools.
