Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that the high voter turnout in Russia’s recent parliamentary election serves as evidence of public endorsement for the country’s national security initiatives and military operations in Ukraine. The election, which occurred over three days from September 18 to 20, saw a reported turnout of 59.3%. According to Putin, this level of participation reflects strong public support for Russia’s current policies.
Near-complete election results showed the ruling United Russia party winning more than 57% of the vote. This victory translates to securing 355 out of the 450 seats in the State Duma, giving the party a commanding majority of nearly 80% in the lower house. Putin conveyed to soldiers involved in the Ukraine conflict that the electoral outcome mirrors public confidence in their efforts.
The election took place under strict political controls, with numerous candidates who oppose the war being barred from participating. The exclusion of these opposition figures has raised concerns about the fairness of the electoral process and the extent to which the results genuinely represent public opinion.
