A two-pronged spin attack led by the brilliant Keshav Maharaj (5-33) and debutant Prenelan Subrayen guided South Africa to a resounding 98-run win over Australia. Subrayen started the rot before Maharaj dismantled the hosts, who collapsed dramatically after a solid start to their chase of 297.
The match was decided in a chaotic 55-ball period where Australia’s innings fell apart. Cruising at 0-60, the dismissal of Travis Head by Subrayen opened the door. Maharaj then charged through it, claiming his first-ever ODI five-for and leaving the Australian middle order in complete disarray as they slumped to 6-89.
South Africa had earlier batted with purpose to post 8-296, a total that proved to be a winning one. Aiden Markram (82) and Temba Bavuma (65) were the chief architects with the bat, nullifying the Australian attack for large periods. Even without the injured Kagiso Rabada, the Proteas looked a well-balanced and formidable unit.
Mitch Marsh fought hard for his 88, but the lack of any other significant contribution meant an Australian victory was never a realistic possibility after the collapse. The team’s inability to handle spin on the Cairns wicket was exposed, a weakness the Proteas will look to exploit again in the series.
