OpenAI Secures Disney’s Character Library for Video AI Platform

OpenAI has secured access to Disney’s extensive character library through a $1 billion investment deal that grants Sora rights to over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises. The three-year licensing agreement enables users to generate AI-powered short videos featuring these beloved characters.
According to Thursday’s announcement, Sora users will be able to create user-prompted social videos that can be viewed and shared by fans. The agreement provides character licensing while explicitly excluding any reproduction of talent likenesses or voices, a distinction that addresses ongoing debates about AI’s impact on entertainment professionals.
Disney’s relationship with OpenAI extends into operational integration. The entertainment company will deploy OpenAI’s tools for new product development and customer experiences, while implementing ChatGPT across its workforce. This comprehensive adoption reflects Disney’s strategic view of AI as a transformative business technology.
Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive, framed the partnership as marking a critical juncture for the industry. He stressed that Disney would use the collaboration to responsibly extend its storytelling capabilities through generative AI while protecting creators and their contributions. This messaging acknowledges the sensitive nature of AI adoption in Hollywood.
Hollywood studios have generally maintained distance from AI companies, concerned about data protection and union relations. OpenAI has pursued conversations with several major studios about Sora’s potential, but Disney’s commitment represents a watershed moment. The platform’s September update introduced social features, allowing users to generate videos from text prompts, explore content from other creators, and produce AI avatars that can be inserted into videos with owner permission.
